The city is teeming as the party pushes their way into the slow-moving stream of people about the side gate of the guild. Eventually the party reaches the east gate, where a city guard motions them through with a grunt. The first day of hiking goes quite well, with pleasant weather and just enough rolling prairie to avoid the monotony of a flat horizon. With dusk approaching a suitable campsite is easily found, and the party settles in for a much-needed rest. The next day is much the same, though there are a few hours during the early afternoon when a band of centaurs seem to be following the party. The centaurs stay far away, popping in and out of sight for about six miles before disappearing for good. Night finds the party in a comfortable camp, with a small cooking fire crackling and the stars emerging in brilliant clarity. The confines of city life seem a distant memory, and the city clamor a pale comparison to the far-off howling of the coyotes.
On the third day of travel the atmosphere changes abruptly. Only a few hours after the lunch break the air gets chilly, and soon thunder clouds can be seen and heard approaching from the west. With no shelter to be had, the party rushes for the lowest spot they can find as the drenching rain begins to fall and the lightning bolts crash down. The hour or two it takes for the storm to pass seems to drag on forever, but by nightfall the party camps within sight of Blood Cairn.
Before reaching the center though, the party notices a glowing indentation in a huge boulder, which is suddenly filled by a shimmering ruby. The ruby disappears as a portal appears in the boulder. Entering cautiously, the party proceeds along and down a twisting corridor.
